(Ayers Rock) Located in the desert plains of
the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park stands a giant sandstone monolith called
Uluru. Other popular
names include Uluru Ayers Rock or Ayers Rock. The rock has long been a sacred
site of the local Pitjantjatjara and Loritja peoples (also known as the Anangu
people). According to Aboriginal lore, the rock is home to a supernatural being
called Wanambi, the Rainbow Serpent. Scholars
believe Uluru is the largest monolith in the world with a circumference of 9.4
kilometers and a height of over 340 meters. The base of this monolith is dominated
by several Aboriginal paintings. A remarkable sight is said to take place
every time the sun is about to set. The rock itself actually changes it colour
during this brief time and creates a visual spectacle. The rock emits a glowing
red colour when the rays of the sun strikes it. Many travellers visit Uluru just
to marvel at this change in colour. (More
