Easter Island

 

Easter Island is located in the South Pacific ocean approximately 2,300 miles west of Santiago, Chile. Since ancient times its people has referred to it as Te-Pito-O-Te-Henua aka "The Navel of the World". Extinct volcanoes, cave paintings and enormous stone statues...Easter Island continues to be one of the world's most mysterious ancient destinations in the world to visit.

Ancient Easter Island - Ahu Tongariki

Located on Easter Island's southern coast lies Ahu Tongariki. One of the largest "Ahu" on the island was discovered there. "Ahu" means ceremonial platforms and they are scattered throughout the island. This site has fifteen incredible Moai stone statues all lined up in a horizontal row. It offers travellers an absolutely stunning setting for a memorable photograph. (More Photos)

Ancient Easter Island - Ahu Nau Nau

Located on Anakena Bay stands Ahu Nau Nau. Upon this site, stands seven extraordinary statues or "Moai" as they are more commonly called. Some of these Moai are headless, some intact and some are wearing gigantic red crowns called "topknots". (More Photos)

Ancient Easter Island - Ahu Tahai

Ahu Tahai is regarded by archaeologists to be the earliest site on the island dating from 690 AD. The picture above depicts one of the Moai statues that was discovered there. It is characterized by a red topknot crown and coral eyes. (More Photos) The eyes seen today are a result of modern restorations because the originals were lost. Legends speak of these statues mysteriously moving by themselves without a single worker ever maneuvering them.
