Ancient Destinations El Salvador

A country commonly overlooked by outdoor travellers is El Salvador. It is the smallest country in Central America and one of the most unique travel destinations to visit. Although travellers are few here, it has gained a reputation for having some of the best waves for surfers in the world, numerous volcanoes and some of its very own ancient Maya ruins.

Ancient El Salvador - Tazumal Pyramid

Located in the area of Chalchuapa and just miles from the city of Santa Ana stands Tazumal. It is a Pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site and is considered to be the best preserved in the country. Some archaeologists argue that the earliest settlements of the area date back to 5000 BC! As a result, this makes it one of the most ancient destinations in the country. (More Photos)

Tazumal was a Mayan regional cultural centre from 300 BC to 1100 AD. It marks the southernmost extension of the Maya culture. Its main attraction is the Tazumal Pyramid which rises 75 feet high. The rest of the site includes drainage systems and a handful of palaces to explore.
