Ancient France - Carnac
StonesOne of the most mysterious ancient destinations to visit
is the village of Carnac. This quiet area is located on the south coast of Brittany
in northwestern France. What makes Carnac out of the ordinary are the long rows
of stones that lead towards the sea parallel to each other. The site consists
of single standing stones called "menhirs" and multi-stone clusters called
"dolmens". (More Photos)
The earliest stones are believed to date from 4500 BC.
The stones range from 0.8 meters to 6.5 meters in height and weigh up to 20 tons
each. There are many theories as to why the stones were placed there. Some suggest
the stones marked burial plots while others argue they had an astronomical significance.
As with most ancient places, the debate concerning Carnac's true purpose is still
unknown. Return
