Ancient Honduras - Structure 4

Located in the western side of Honduras is an extraordinary array of archaeological ruins from the ancient city of Copan. Early signs of habitation suggest that the city was in use as far back as 1,000 BC. It is one of the largest Maya sites ever to be found. The site contains one of the best preserved ball courts which is considered by many to be the second largest within Central America. A key figure in Copan's long history was a ruler by the name of 18 Rabbit (aka Waxaklahun-Ubah-K'awil). He came to the throne in 695 AD and is credited for turning Copan into one of the most powerful cities in the Mayan world. (More Photos)

Another important structure at Copan is the Acropolis. It has two large plazas - the west and east courts. Scattered throughout these courts are a series of temples and altars. Archaeological excavations below the Acropolis led to the discovery of a residence and tomb from a ruler called Yak Kuk Mo (aka Green Quetzal Parrot) who reigned during the 4th century AD. The ruler's body was covered with an assortment of grave goods that included jade, jaguar teeth and pots. Another incredible structure worth mentioning to see at Copan is the famous Hieroglyphic Stairway. This amazing structure has sixty-three steps and is considered to have the longest known Mayan inscription on stone from Pre-Columbian America!
