Sudan - Meroe Pyramids Situated northeast of Sudan's capital
of Khartoum lies the ancient city of Meroe. The site once stood as the
southern capital of the Kushite Kingdom (593 BC - 330 AD). Partially covered
amongst the yellow sand dunes are about fifty pyramids that are still in very
good condition to see today. (More

and range from 6 to 30 metres in height. There are also a number of small temples
in the area that are decorated with relief carvings. Archaeologists say the pyramids
served as tombs for the rulers of the Kushite Empire.
