Ancient Sudan - Meroe Pyramids

Situated northeast of Sudan's capital of Khartoum lies the ancient city of Meroe. The site once stood as the southern capital of the Kushite Kingdom (593 BC - 330 AD). Partially covered amongst the yellow sand dunes are about fifty pyramids that are still in very good condition to see today. (More Photos)

The pyramids are built from stepped courses of stone blocks and range from 6 to 30 metres in height. There are also a number of small temples in the area that are decorated with relief carvings. Archaeologists say the pyramids served as tombs for the rulers of the Kushite Empire.
