Arrival of the Gods: Revealing the Alien Landing Sites at Nazca:
In the 1970s, Erich von Däniken sparked a wave of public and scientific debate
with Chariots of the Gods?, which postulated that certain archaeological sites
pointed to earthly visits by extraterrestrials in the predawn of human history.
Since then his ideas have been both attacked as ludicrous and praised as genius,
but Däniken himself steers a middle course and simply maintains that his
theory is the logical conclusion to be drawn from the evidence.
In his
latest book, Arrival of the Gods, Däniken returns to South America in search
of further proof supporting his ideas, but instead of regurgitating photos and
measurements of the familiar scratch drawings on the Nazca plain, he flies to
the Palpa mountains, where he finds his evidence, among other things, in the form
of giant mandalas and an enormous grid of lines that closely resembles the landing
aids found in modern airports.
Color photographs of Däniken's discoveries
burst from the pages of Arrival of the Gods, accompanied by prose that barely
contains his contagious excitement over these striking earthworks. Anyone who
has previously dismissed Däniken's work out of hand should beware: there
is much more going on here than the odd prattlings of a single subversive author.

Maria and the Stars of Nazca / Maria y las Estrellas de Nazca
(Bilingual Edition) (Spanish Edition) :
A bilingual (Eng./Span.) children's book about the giant Nazca Lines in Peru and
the woman who revealed them to the world. Authentic depictions introduce readers
of all ages to the gigantic land figures and lines that Maria Reiche studied and
worked to preserve for over 50 years. While the book does not try to tell the
reader the purpose of these mysterious lines, it does mention several possible
theories and the last page suggests Maria's idea that the land pictures are somehow
connected to star constellations.
The text is written in short, poetic
lines and is easily readable in English or Spanish at an elementary level. An
accompanying bilingual CD allows readers to hear the story in both languages.
This one-of-a-kind, fully illustrated book is a stimulating resource for:

A Sourcebook of Nasca Ceramic Iconography: Reading a Culture
through Its Art:
The art of ancient Peru is spectacular, and of all the beautiful Central
Andean styles, Nasca pottery is without peer. In this comprehensive volume Donald
Proulx, the leading authority on Nasca ceramic iconography, presents his definitive
statement on this extraordinary art through sound scholarship and a cautious,
rigorous, and carefully explained methodology.
The volume excels for its
detailed description of the Nasca ceramic style (forms, iconography, phases),
stimulating interpretation of the iconography, penetrating linkage of the pots
and their iconography to the archaeologically known Nasca society, and diachronic
treatment of the evolution of Nasca art and society. This will be a foundational
text for many decades of future research.---Helaine Silverman, Department
of Anthropology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Machu Picchu: A Civil Engineering Marvel :
Machu Picchu, the famous "Lost City of the Inca," has fascinated and
captivated archaeologists for five centuries. The royal estate of Pachacuti, an
Inca ruler, was built in the fifteenth century and abandoned barely more than
a century after its construction. How could the "primitive" Inca construct
a city on top of a mountain? How could they solve the intricate problems of drainage,
of water supply, of architecture?
...The book tells us as much about the
practical challenges of building a city as it does about the mysterious Inca,
and it should be an immediate hit with armchair archaeologists and fans of the
kind of ancient civilization documentaries that are a staple on PBS's Nova...
